"R.O.T.O.R." (1989) (Cullen Blaine)
So successfully wrongheaded, dysfunctional, awkwardly clumsy, unintentionally ridiculous and unbelievably straight-faced in its mis-guided attempts to copy clichéd Hollywood-style action movie “excitement”, heroics, plotting, pacing, characterizations and colorful sarcastic dialogue that "R.O.T.O.R." almost transcends into the avant-garde. Much more than just a third-rate, Texas-made, rural cinema Robocop and Terminator hybrid copycat, it’s an unintentional 80’s gem of silly seriousness, hilariously over-the-top clichéd characterizations, ridiculously interpretated genre ingredients, bad jokes delivered with relish, straight-faced clumsiness, absurdly un-exciting and awkward action, southern fried explicatives, and some actually cool synth melodies. Epically dysfunctional and blissfully awkward. Imagine an unstoppable, mad-killing, terror-inducing, rampaging robot android that can’t seem to kill one measly frightened woman, whose Achilles' heel is car horns and who almost loses his balance when trying to coldly stomp over the bodies of his fallen foes. A hilariously unintentional gonzo wonder. It’s like a classic MST3K episode with the jokes built in. It’s up there with "Nightbeast" (1982); yes it’s really that good! Plus check out that cool Mad Max copycat, Judge Dredd-esq comic style cover art!
